Required:

A good long pair of rubber gloves.
Some old clothes.
2mtrs of strong twine.
A length of wood around 300 mm long.
A small container.
A plastic bucket.
Some old cloths.
A large adjustable wrench.

Method:

Initially you should fill a bucket with water just in case the toilet needs to be used.
Next, take off the lid from the top of the cistern and place it somewhere safe. Bankside Plumbers are skilled tradesmen who can repair all kinds of plumbing issues. Use the container to bail out the water from the cistern. Then, lift the float and arm inside the cistern and using the wood as a batten, lay it across the top of the cistern with the cord tied in the middle. Use the cord to tie the float mechanism in the up position, held by the wood which locks of the fill valve water inlet. With the cistern more or less empty take the wrench and undo the nut on the underside of the unit. Move the outlet pipe to one side. Depending on your model, undo the nut clamps, disconnect the wire that links the flushing lever to the top of the siphon, and then lift the whole siphon clear of the tank. South Bank Plumbers can carry out emergency repairs. You now have a choice, you can either replace the whole siphon, or you can remove the pierced plastic plate from the underside of the siphon, and remove and replace the plastic flap valve.

Whatever you choose to do, it is a quite simple and straightforward operation. When you have fitted the new flap valve, or bought a whole new unit, you simply reverse all the fitting procedures as already described, and the job is finally complete.

Note: The trick with this particular job is to make sure that you thoroughly clean and dry all of the washers, nuts, and surfaces prior to refitting.
